Even though I am more of an Edmonton wedding photographer, I keep finding myself talking more and more about my newborn sessions. Whether it was “first comes love, then comes marriage” or not (😉), I LOVE taking newborn photos. Whether it’s your first baby or fifth, photos save your precious family memories and are well worth the investment. You are going to want to look back and remember this time!
Pose Ideas for Your Newborn Photos
I personally always like to capture a mix of sweet poses and more natural candid photos. As the below photos give you ideas, I hope that it will leave you feeling inspired and excited. Similar to wedding photography, we will get a mixture of all the different shots. The babies yawn, and the perfect sleeping pose. Maybe some crying photos too haha. We want to capture these photos authentically, after all. I also like to get a mixture of the close ups and whole (tiny) body shots. Enjoy!
Prop Ideas (and Signs) for Your Newborn Photos!
I could go on and on here but I love cute signs and props in newborn sessions. Don’t feel obligated to buy something, or come up with something overly creative! The picture below was a picture from the baby’s room (that was well fitting) and below that was a very cute Harry Potter setup with books they already owned (and a really cute outfit).
I know that as new parents (or soon to be parents) you know this but let me just say this. Some of these photos are not going to be possible depending on how old your baby is so keep that in mind if you are making a shot list. We never want to try any pose that puts your baby at risk!! Safety first.
Pose ideas with your newborn
I talked about whether or not to take newborn photos at home or in a studio in this post, but if you haven’t read it, you should know I am a big fan of taking newborn photos at home. Yes, there are beautiful studios around Edmonton we could take your newborn photos in. But for me? I want to make sure I get you in the photos too. I want the whole family in them! And that is a lot easier at home where everyone is comfortable. Whether it is just you and your mini-me or you have a big family already, here are some pose ideas for your at-home newborn session (also often called Lifestyle Newborn Photography).
Whatever your family unit looks like – I want to take their photos!
Preparing for your newborn photos
I talk more about that in this post, but here are a few quick tips if you are thinking about pose ideas. First, plan out your outfits and any props (like cute signs!) in advance. Pack more outfits than you think you’ll need if you are not taking the photos at home. If we are taking them at home, all you need is a good window with light – don’t worry about having the perfect instagrammable spot. The other nice thing about having the photos at home is that we can crank up the thermostat so your baby is extra comfortable (it will show in the photos!). With studio, you don’t get as many of you with your baby. Feeling comfortable handy.Â
