When should you book your engagement photos? As soon as you get engaged? Wait until closer to your wedding day? My post last week about one of my favourite engagement photo locations in Edmonton (the Muttart Conservatory!) had me thinking about one of the most frequently asked questions I get as an Edmonton wedding photographer. Is there really a right time to book your engagement photos? Today, I want to share a little advice about the pros and cons of booking your engagement photos too far (or too close) to your wedding day.
First, let me just say, there is NO wrong time to document your love story. I would take photos of you and your love story every single day if I could.
Booking Engagement Photos Right After You Get Engaged
I love when couples reach out as soon as they get engaged. After all, you are a little extra in love. Plus, if you are celebrating this new chapter with photos right away, I can only guess that you prioritize photos as much as I do.
Taking engagement photos right away is great. Then, you have more time to USE these photos while you are still engaged. Taking your engagement photos early leaves plenty of opportunity to use them for your save the dates, post them on social media, change your profile photo every 2 weeks to ensure that each photo gets the attention it deserves – whatever your thing is! If you have a lot of family and friends coming from out of town, I always think this is even more important. After all, sharing photos is one of the ways we can stay connected to each other. Seeing photos of you and yours snuggling up and madly in love will have them even more excited for the wedding!

Taking Engagement Photos Close To Your Wedding Date
Sometimes, you lose track of time and your wedding approaches quickly. Sometimes, you want to postpone photos because you want your body to look a certain way. I know this one is common – but PLEASE don’t do this. You deserve to be celebrated no matter WHAT your body looks like. Whatever the reason, there are certain advantages to waiting until closer to your wedding day to take your engagement photos.
First, you’ll be well-practiced for your wedding day. I always love when couples experiment with fun poses they saw on Pinterest or try new things during their engagement photos that you wouldn’t necessarily try for the first time on your wedding day.
If you get nervous in front of the camera (and are nervous about being nervous!), booking engagement photos close to your wedding date can be a beautiful thing. After a few minutes in front of my camera, you’ll realize just how easy it really is!
Don’t skip engagement photos!
Even if your wedding day is sneaking up on you, and you planned on getting your engagement photos MUCH earlier, I want to really encourage you to not skip this step. Engagement photos are really SO important to getting great photos (and more importantly – feel COMFORTABLE) on your wedding day.
