You may not know this about me, but I am secretly kind of fancy. So fancy, that when I realized I wouldn’t be able to host a beautiful party and serve food in a reasonable COVID-safe way, I decided against having a gender reveal party. What can I say? I like to be a good host. And I like the instagram-worthy pictures too. So today, I bring you a blog post, talking ALL about where to take newborn photos. And my opinion, is to take them at home.
(PS: If you are new around here, hi). I am Katie and I am a wedding and newborn photographer in Edmonton. Although my website is geared toward Edmonton wedding photography, I LOVE newborn and maternity photos. To book your session, or for more details, you can contact me here. I can’t wait to chat! If you are wondering how to PREPARE for newborn photos, I also have you covered right here. Like I said, I like to be a good host.
Feeling comfortable at home
The BIGGEST point of concern I hear from new parents, is that their house is kind of messy. This is often due to the fact that they had a brand new BABY. Whatever you are worried about, I want to put your mind at ease. I guarantee you I have seen worse. And are worried about the photos?
If you really look at newborn photos, often the background isn’t even really visible. All we need is great lighting (ideally natural light from a window!) and a comfortable blanket for the baby. I do encourage you to tidy up if you want some family photos of you in the house (and I ALWAYS encourage some photos with the parents!), but other than that, please don’t worry about your house at all. As a bonus – One of the tips I share in this post about preparing for newborn photos is to set your house temperature a few degrees higher so that your baby is nice and toasty.
Where to take newborn photos
Typically, newborn photos in Edmonton either take place in a studio setting or your home. I am a huge advocate of taking newborn photos at home, which I explain more in the section below. Newborn photos almost always take place indoors, because we want to make sure your baby is as comfortable as possible during the photos. For Fresh 48 photos, photos are typically taken at the hospital.
Perks to staying at home for newborn photos
One of the biggest perks, is that you won’t feel stressed trying to “get somewhere” for a certain time only to have your new baby spit up or start crying in the car. The goal with newborn photos is to capture precious memories that you ENJOY taking. I don’t want any part of that to be stressful for you. That’s part of my job. Yes, I do appreciate that there is something nice about the controlled environment of a studio. But honestly, I just love capturing newborn memories at home. It has sentimental value too.
Another perk for staying home and hiring a photographer to take your newborn photos (which, by the way, if you are in Edmonton you can contact me here and I would be happy to chat further), is that you don’t have to worry about bringing enough outfits or forgetting cute props you had planned. While I do encourage you to plan the outfits and any props ahead of time, it’s nice to be able to grab something quickly that you think of while the photos are happening.
Planning your newborn photos
Are you planning your newborn photos in Edmonton or the surrounding area (Leduc, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, St. Albert)? If so, I would love to chat further. As a photographer, it is my biggest passion and joy to take photos that last a life time and save your previous memories. Regardless of where you take your photos, I would love to help make this moment as special as possible.
